Near Field communication (NFC) is a set of standards for smartphones and similar devices to establish radio communication with each other by touching them together or bringing them into proximity, usually no more than a few inches.

  • NFC operates at 13.56 MHz and is an extension of High Frequency (HF) RFID standards. NFC therefore shares many physical properties with RFID such as one way communication and the ability to communicate without a direct line of sight.
  • RFID is the process by which items are uniquely identified using radio waves, and NFC is a specialized subset within the family of RFID technology. Specifically, NFC is a branch of High-Frequency (HF) RFID, and both operate at the 13.56 MHz frequency. NFC is designed to be a secure form of data exchange, and an NFC device is capable of being both an NFC reader and an NFC tag. This unique feature allows NFC devices to communicate peer-to-peer.
  • There are however following three key differences.
    • NFC is capable of two way communication and can therefore be used for more complex interactions such as card emulation and peer-to-peer (P2P) sharing.
    • NFC is limited to communication at close proximity, typically 5cm or less.
    • Only a single NFC tag can be scanned at one time.

One-way NFC data transfer

Using your NFC smartphone, you can tap NFC smart tags that might appear in everything from promotional movie posters and business cards to museum tour placards. Smart tags are a lot like RFID tags; they're simply tuned to work with an NFC reader instead of an RFID one.

Quick Response Code (QR Code)

Trademark for a type of matrix barcode (or two-dimensional barcode)

A QR code uses four standardized encoding modes:

  • Numeric
  • Alphanumeric
  • Byte binary
  • Kanji

to efficiently store data; extensions may also be used.
